"Natural Sound" Concept: Yamaha, with a long history of over 125 years as a musical instrument maker, also has a high reputation for HiFi components. Yamaha's A-S501 integrated amplifier takes advantage of this rich experience and high technological expertise. Based on the concept of "Natural Sound", for reproducing all music as it really sounds, and built with scrupulous care from circuit design to basic sound production, the A-S501 reproduces high sound quality and musically rich sound.

Proprietary Yamaha Technologies: The Yamaha AS-501 integrated amplifier employs proprietary Yamaha technologies for optimum performance and sound reproductions.

  • ToP-ART Design: When processing and transmission of the audio signal is simple and direct there is less chance of it being affected by noise and distortion. Yamaha's amplifier design technology called "ToP-ART" features an I/O (input to output) Direct Symmetrical Design, with left and right channels organized in a straight, symmetrical layout for highest signal purity.
  • ART (Anti-Resonance and Tough): In addition, the ART (Anti-Resonance and Tough) Base bottom chassis and a solid center bar provide high-rigidity support and vibration damping.

High Current Amplifier: The Yamaha A-S501 features a dynamic, high current stereo amplifier with low impedance drive capability. The amp is rated at 85 watts x 2-channels, measured from 20-20 kHz into 8 with 0.019% THD (100 watts x 2-channels, measured from 20-20 kHz into 6 with 0.038% THD).

High Quality Parts: Custom-made power transformer, custom-made block capacitors, two direct signal path speaker relays, one-point grounding system, aluminum-extruded heat sinks and other top-quality parts effortlessly handle demanding audio signal conditions. The quality of each individual part, as well as how they work together, basically determines the sound quality of any component. Yamaha uses only very high quality parts, carefully selected and tested.

Sophisticated Front-Panel Design: With a beautifully simple and unique design inherited directly from Yamaha's HiFi audio components, this amplifier also boasts an easy-to-operate button layout. The aluminum front-panel has a richly textured silver hairline finish. The control knobs are also of the same luxurious construction as used on our top-end models. The rotary encoder makes it quick and easy to select input sources. The luxury hairline finish material offers a nice tactile feeling. LEDs clearly show which source is selected, so you can easily switch sources even in a dark room

Controls

Pure Direct Mode: The Pure Direct mode causes the music signals to travel the shortest possible circuit route, bypassing the buffer amp and the tone, loudness and balance controls to virtually eliminate any signal degradation for the purest sound quality.

Variable Loudness Control: The A-S501 also features a new analog loudness control on the front-panel that uses electronic volume for higher sound quality, which lets you adjust the loudness effect as desired. Separate from the overall volume, this controls the balance of the low- and high- frequency sounds, providing full tonal range at any volume level; compensating for the natural loss in the human ear of high and low frequencies at soft levels.

Tone Controls: The integrated amplifier features independent bass (20Hz-400Hz band) and treble (3.5kHz-20kHz band) controls so you can increase or decrease the low band and high band frequency response (+/-10dB). The entire low and high bands are increased or decreased (you cannot indicate a specific center frequency for bass & treble). You can also adjust the output balance of the left and right speakers.

Impedance Switch: The integrated amplifier features a rear-panel impedance switch to match the impedance level of the speakers connected. Choose High or Low:

  • High: Select High if using one set (A or B) of speakers with impedance of 6-ohm or higher; when bi-wiring the impedance of the speaker must also be 6-ohms or higher.
  • Low: Select Low if using one set (A or B) of speakers with the impedance of 4-ohm to 6-ohm; if using two sets (A and B) of speakers simultaneously, the impedance of each speaker must be at least 8-ohms; when bi-wiring the impedance of the speaker must also be 4-ohms to 6-ohms.

Simple Remote Control: The clean, simple design of the remote control provides easy-to-understand one-hand operation. The easy-to-use design makes it simple to adjust song volume and order. The remote has a sophisticated looking hairline finish that matches the design of the amplifiers. You can also use the remote to control a Yamaha CD/SACD player.

Auto Power Standby: The amplifier has a power management function that detects when it hasn't been used for a long time (about 8 hours) even though the power is on, and automatically shifts it into standby mode. So even if you forget to turn it off, power consumption will be minimized.

Connections

Gold-Plated Terminals: The Yamaha A-S501 has gold-plated terminals for all of its inputs and outputs. These gold-plated terminals ensure a high quality connection that prevents signal loss.

Analog & Digital Inputs: The Yamaha A-S501 integrated amplifier offers analog & digital inputs for connection of a variety of home audio components.

  • RCA + Phono: The Yamaha integrated amplifier is equipped with six analog stereo (RCA) inputs for connecting external analog audio sources, including a turntable. The Phono input can be used to connect a turntable with an MM phono cartridge to play vinyl records. The unit's Phono input also features a ground terminal.
  • Optical & Coaxial Digital Inputs: The A-S501 is equipped with both optical (toslink) and coaxial (RCA) digital audio inputs. The optical and coaxial inputs will accept 2ch PCM (not Dolby Digital/DTS). The audio stays in the digital domain, giving you pure, pristine dynamic sound for all your entertainment sources, from sports and other programs to movies and concerts.

Recording Outputs: There are also two pair of RCA outputs for recording audio through the amplifier to recording device.

A & B Speaker Terminals: The Yamaha integrated amplifier features binding post terminals for its A & B speaker outputs. You can use the A & B speaker outputs to power two pair of speakers, or bi-wire a single pair of compatible speakers. The terminals are not 5-way binding posts because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs and they are too far apart for dual banana plugs.

Sub Output: A terminal for connecting a subwoofer is provided, allowing you to increase the bass output of your system for a more powerful sound with better overall sound quality

Headphone Output: The A-S501 integrated amplifier is equipped with a front-panel 1/4" headphone output for connecting a pair of headphones (sold separately). When a set of headphones is plugged in, the speaker outputs are automatically muted.

Q
I noticed that the Yamaha integrated amps (A-S301 and A-S501) have a single out to a subwoofer. How would I connect this single output to my powered subwoofer with two RCA inputs?
harold w.  Feb 26, 2024
1 answer
A
Greetings Hal. Thank you for your question. Various powered subwoofers have one of their RCA inputs labeled as LFE. That is where your single ended subwoofer able will go into. If your powered subwoofer does not have the LFE feature, you would need to split that single RCA into two, then into both RCA inputs on your subwoofer.

Q
Does 501 support gapless playback?
michael  Jan 04, 2023
1 answer
A
That is a bit of a confusing question, Michael. This Yamaha A-S501 is a stereo integrated and has no capability of playing a source on its own. For gapless playback you would need to connect a CD player that supports gapless playback. Something Like the Yamaha CDS-303 in the link below would be a great call. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_022CDS303/Yamaha-CD-S303.html

Q
Can this yamaha as501 be used with a yamaha rn303 to get more power and bass and treble control?
chuck  Mar 14, 2022
1 answer
A
You would have to use line out to the 501. So the signal going to the 501 wouldn't have any treble or bass settings passed through. I think sound of class A or A/B amps with loudness control (and a subwoofer) resolve most of the issues with midrange bring too loud. I play from a PC with a digital EQ when possible (especially important at low volumes), but an old-fashioned analog equalizer connected to the amp comes in handy when sending music from a phone/tablet that doesn't have powerful digital EQs.

This amp does not have a tape loop but 2 tape inputs on it so hooking up an equalize would not be possible do not be let that be discourage you from buying it with the natural sound this amp produce you will never notice it I always listen to my music (CD or Vinyl) thru the pure direct mode and wow you can hear music the way it was meant to be heard pure and natural
paula  Mar 23, 2019
A
Not knowing the specifics of your equalizer, this answer will be general. The S501 does not have a loop built in for effects peocessing; thus, you will have to insert the equalizer between the source (cd, dvd, recorder, turntable) and the input of the amplifier. So - connect your source player to the input of the equalizer and then connect the output of the equalizer to one of the inputs of the S501. Note that the S501 already has some control of the bass & treble available. I don't know about your equalizer but most I've had experience with will have a negative effect on the sound.

EHow to Connect an Equalizer to an Integrated Amp By Candace Horgan ShareShare on Facebook While not as commonly used as they used to be, equalizers remain a popular option for fine-tuning home-audio systems' frequency response. Using an equalizer properly requires a lot of knowledge of your room specs, but you can easily connect the equalizer to your integrated amp, even if it lacks the Tape Loop function most equalizers depend on. Figure Out the Chain Step Figure out the audio chain (how many components you have and how you plan to connect them) in your system. If your only source is a CD or DVD player, or if your integrated amp has preamp-out and preamp-in connections, you can easily make all of the necessary connections. Step Connect your source component with one pair of RCA cables to the input of the graphic equalizer. Use cables long enough to allow you to place the equalizer in your rack. Step Connect the output of the equalizer to the preamp input of your integrated amplifier with the second pair of RCA cables.nter an answer to this question.

Q
How many watts per channel @ 4 ohms?
tyler  Sep 05, 2018
3 answers
A
The manual indicates that the maximum power per channel at 6 ohms is 100 watts per channel - it only gives the minimum watts per channel minimum for 8 ohms and 6 ohms, so for 4 ohms the minimum watts per channel is in excess of 100. Plus the "dynamic power per channel (IHF), which I understand as the maximum at any moment or headroom, is 185 watts per channel at 4 ohms; ironically, in this category the manual does give us the power rating for 8 ohms, 6 ohms and 4 ohms. Again, the manual does not give a minimum watts per channel rating for 4 ohms while it does indicate that it is 85 watts per channel for 8 ohms and 100 watts per channel for 6 ohms. As you can see, as the ohms go down the power goes up, so it is accurate to say it will have more minimum power at 4 ohms than it has at 6 ohms, so it would be in excess of 100 watts per channel minimum for 4 ohm speakers with the ability to produce peak or headroom power at 185 watts per channel for 4 ohm speakers.

I'm aware this has a dac as I own this device, but if I were to purchase a separate dac(I'm eyeing the Cambridge dacmagic) how would I go about hooking this up? Right now I have my iMac to as501 via toslink. Would I be better off using the dacmagic to Mac and avoiding the as501 all together?

Looks to me that you would have to use analog via RCA type connectors. If you wanted to connect using one of the digital cables you need to purchase the dacmagic plus.

Q
Are all of the inputs on the A-S501 such as tuner the same as CD with the same frequency response and no LPF for a pilot signal on FM? Also the Toslink and coax digital are they the same (except different cable)?
david  May 17, 2018
2 answers
A
I see nothing in the specs that would indicate that the tuner input is any different than the other inputs. There is no mention of a low band filter in the manual so I assume (with 51% confidence) that there is none. The Toslink and coax inputs both accept PCM stereo signals. Any difference between the two would be more a result of the cable you are using. I personally can not tell much difference but then I use consumer-grade cables. The opinion of some reviewers is that the coax is slightly better unless you use a high-quality optical cable - AudioQuest, for example. You can have one device connected to Toslink and another connected to coax and select either from the front panel. Hope this helps.
howard  May 25, 2018

Not sure if the frequency response are the same, but the tuner, CD, tape deck all sound fantastic. The Toslink and coax digital are two separate cables of I'm not mistaken.....sorry.

Q
this one can connect to any kind of speakers right? i have intention to by a pair of Bose speaker and i wanna make sure they can work together. thank you

A
I don't have any Bose speakers so, I can't say for sure, However, my advice is to look at the spec.'s on the Bose speakers. Most speakers are 8 Ohm speakers and they may require a minimum amount of power to drive them. For example I have some old AR-3 speakers that were 4 Ohm speakers and required a minimum of 25 Watts per speaker, just to start to drive them. However, it is very hard to find an Amp that will put out the 4 Ohms to drive my speakers. This particular unit has a switch on the back to drive either 4 Ohm, or 8 Ohm speakers, which is what I was looking for. According to the spec's for this unit, this unit will put out 100 Watts per channel @ 4 Ohms, which should be more than enough to drive my speakers. If the Bose speakers are 8 Ohm speakers, which are much more common, see what the minimum spec's are for driving them at 8 Ohms. According to the spec sheet for this unit, this unit will put out at least 85 Watts per channel and I suspect that the Bose speakers requirements will be under that amount, which will be OK, but I am not sure. Check the Bose speaker Spec Sheet to see what the requirements actually are. Another concern would be to note what is the maximum amount of power that the Bose speakers will take. In earlier years, I have blown out some speakers by applying much more power to the speakers than they were designed to take, but fortunately for me the particular speakers that blew were kind of cheap so the lesson wasn't very costly, but I took note for future considerations. Hope this information will help in making your decision. Lot's of luck

Yes, amp is very capable to power almost any speaker; as far as Bose goes since they never mention any of their specs I would say this amp would most likely power them with not even knowing they are there.

Q
Does this unit have a tape monitor loop or some other way to use an (analog) external sound processor? My speakers require the use of a sound processor at the pre-amp level but I am not sure if this amp will allow that.
michael  Dec 07, 2014
2 answers
A
I'm sorry, but I don't think that I can answer your question. I do note that there are 2 sets of RCA Out connections on the back of the unit, but I have no idea if they would as a pre-amp. I assume that each set might be able to be used as a tap monitor loop because of the in and out function, but that was not my reason for purchasing this particular unit. I have a pair of Acoustic Research AR-3 speakers that I purchased back in the middle 50's that were some really great speakers for my purposes and I had a Heathkit Amp that I constructed from a kit in the same time period to drive them. My amp lasted quite a few years, but it had old style fuses to protect the device. The old fuses were no longer made and I would blow the fuses pretty regular. So, recently, a recommended replacement fuse was put in the amp and the amp burned. So much for the amp. My main problem was that the speakers were 4 ohm speakers and very few, if any, companies made a reasonably priced amp that would provide the 4 ohms required to drive the speakers. This unit has the ability to put out the 4 ohms and have more than enough power to drive my speakers and no fuses to buy. The holidays are here now and I haven't had enough time to hook everything up, so I don't know how they will work, however, I suspect that the old speakers just might blow before the new amp does. In any case, I don't have an answer for Mike D's problem and I am hoping that I will be able to relive those wonderful days of my youth, when I finally am able to finally get this unit hooked up and operating and listening to my old AR-3 speakers.

Does the face plate extend a bit past the chassis case? I'm looking to mount vertically in a vintage stereo console and wanted to see if the face plate could potentially cover the opening.

The face plate extends off of the chassis approximately 1/8" around all sides. Keep in mind that this amplifier, like most, is vented on the top to allow heat to escape. Mounting this sideways may and cause issues with ventilation.

What does the bass knob control? Could I turn down the bass knob and turn up gain on sub as a form of bass management(need to protect my mains somehow)? Does that turn down 'volume' of bass or actually remove lower frequencies? Please explain in-depth the bass knob...

That is a EQ level controller that adjusts the bass level of the audio being played on the speakers and a powered subwoofer if one is connected to it but does not block bass from being output to them. I want to slowly upgrade the quality of my system but cannot afford to do everything at once... If I pair this amp with my Infinity SM-122 speakers will I improve the quality of my system (I currently run the speakers with a Yamaha HTR-5063) or should I replace the speakers first?
yuval  Jun 07, 2021
3 answers
A
The quality difference between this amp and your HTR receiver is significant. Compared to an integrated receiver, this amp focuses on the quality of the amplification stage, and it shows. I replaced a Yamaha RX-V800 receiver with this amp, and it absolutely woke up my B&W602 speakers (especially the bass). It's an excellent choice for a two channel setup. I wouldn't hesitate to run my B&W CM10s on this amp, it's that good. I believe your SM-122 have good sensitivity, so the 85 watts should be plenty for a small/moderate size room.

richard  Jun 10, 2020
A
Yes, it's easy. You must purchase a wireless Bluetooth adapter then simply plug it into the back of your amp. Follow the instructions of the device you want to connect and you are done.
richard  Jun 10, 2020
A
You need to purchase an external bluetooth adapter to attach to the receiver. Yamaha sells the YBA-11 Bluetooth Wireless Audio Receiver for Yamaha AV Products on Amazon for about $70 but there are others that are less expensive.
dominic  Jun 10, 2020
A
There are bluetooth adapters out there. I saw a video on Youtube. The easiest solution for me has been to hook up a tablet (Ipad/Amazon Fire) to Receiver using Y Cable RCA to 3.5mm Male to Lightening 3.5mm Female I use the tablet to open up Spotify. Then, from across the room, i open up Spotify on my phone & i can change songs from my phone. Must both be on Wifi. When you open up Spotify in your phone, the app will ask you if you want to listen on the phone or tablet. Just pick tablet. The app will still let you do the controlling /music selection from your phone. Ipad is easier to use & fluid. Amazon Fire tablet works & is about $30 -$50.

You would have to buy an external adapter. They recommend the Yamaha YBA-11, but it looks like that is discontinued. There are plenty of other third-party adapters you can buy though.
gregory  Jun 10, 2020
A
I use a separate Bluetooth receiver outputting into one of the inputs on A-S501. The one I purchased can be powered by the usb port (check requirements) and so turns on and off with the amp. Pairing the BT receiver with your phone/tablet/pc gives you the streaming capability.
edward  Jun 10, 2020

yeah ... just buy a little harmon kardon bluetooth black box (the size of pack of matches - super small) 50-75 bucks if memory serves... just plug it into an aux in port... pair phone / device to that, switch to aux and job done!

How would I hook a computer to this amp? What accessory would I need?
s  Apr 26, 2020
6 answers
A
There is a digital fiber input you can use if your sound card supports it. That's probably the best way to go. You can also use a headphone to RCA cable to connect to the amp via an analogue input. I doubt you could tell a quality difference. There also is a Bluetooth adapter you can buy if wireless is more convenient for you.
gregory  Apr 29, 2020
A
There is a TOSLink port, which works for decoding the output from a TV (for example). If you want a USB connection, you need to step-up to higher models in the product range. The A-S801 should act as an external DAC for a PC.

Can this amplifier be used with the Audio Technica LP 1240 turntable ? I don't want to use the built in one that comes with the turntable. And also source some Klipsch R-620 speakers through it.
fritz  Dec 26, 2018

Short Answer: Yes. The Yamaha A-S501 has a built-in phono preamp. I paired mine with my 37-year-old Dual 741Q turntable and Shure V-15-IV cartridge (both bought new and both long since out-of-production), back then we didn't need to have photo preamps in the turntables and they weren't there! You'll do well with that fine Audio Technica turntable and won't need to use the phono preamp section in the turntable. In fact, if the A-T turntable doesn't have a provision for bypassing its built-in-preamp, choose one of the other A-T turntables in Crutchfield's lineup. Although I can't speak authoritatively to the pairing of an A-S501 to the K;ipsch R-620's, it's hard for me to imagine that such a pairing wouldn't work splendidly. The amplifier has a tremendous amount of clean power to spare. This is where I suggest taking advantage of one of Crutchfield's particularly helpful web site features. In addition to reporting specifications for each product, Crutchfield publishes the instruction manuals for most products. I read the entire instruction manual for the A-S501 (and the several other products I've bought from Crutchfield) on the Crutchfield web site before I bought the unit. Pretty cool! Full disclosure: I'm thrilled with my A-S301 and with Crutchfield.
fredrick  Dec 27, 2018
A
I currently have the Yamaha A-S501 amplifier connected to an Audio-Technica AT-LP60 turntable. So it should be compatible with your turntable. Chat with one of the Crutchfield experts. That is how I chose this amplifier (I already had the turntable). I'm still in the market for some speakers, so I'm afraid that I can't address your second question.
matthew l.  Dec 26, 2018
A
I can't tell you for sure about that turntable with that receiver, but I do know that my teac turntable will not work with my onkyo phono jack inputs. I had to run it through one of the other input options. Concerning the speakers, they are awesome, unless you are wanting a lot of bass. The 2x6" woofers are adequate, but I went ahead and got a sub to enhance the lower end. I hope that helps.

Will this amp be able to power bookshelf speakers with the following specs?? RECOMMENDED AMPLIFIER POWER 50-120W SENSITIVITY 86dB (2.83V @ 1M) Nominal impedance 6 ohms

I have my yamaha a-s501 biwired to a pair of klipsch rb-81II large bookshelf speakers used for dedicated turntable set up. More than enough power for these beasts.
andrew  Aug 12, 2017
A
The Yamaha 501 should not have any problem powering the speakers that you are looking at. The amp can deliver 85 watts into an 8 ohm load and 100 watts per channel into 6 ohm speakers. Your speakers recommend 50-120, so you will be in the sweet end of that range with the 501. My experience with the Yamaha and bookshelf speakers rated at 88 decibel sensitivity is quite powerful and high volume levels at at about a 12 o'clock volume setting. My speaker have a nominal impedance of 8 ohms, your 6 ohm speakers would get a bit more power out of the amp. Hope this helps.

You should be able to record any source that you are listening to onto your tape deck or cd recorder by attaching them to either the line 2 or line 3 inputs and rec outputs as described on page 9 of the owners manual. I have not done this myself yet, but it should be rather straightforward. I definetly do recommend this amp as I am very happy with pure sound quality and ample power that it provides.

2 PART QUESTION: I recently purchased and I am REALLY enjoying a pair of Elac F7 tower speakers that I purchased from Crutchfield. Have any of you Crutchfield team members "heard" that combination of this Yamaha AS501 integrated and the Elac F7 speakers? Also, will this Yamaha AS501 likely sound noticeably "better" than my 6 year old Harmon Kardon 3490 receiver, which you also sold? I am simply looking for an upgrade of basic sound quality. Thanks

Generally, an integrated amplifier will sound much better than a receiver. however, I had a HK Blu-ray/ tuner /amp a BD model I think all built in along side this exact Yamaha. While the HK was good, the Yamaha was an over all more detailed and better amp.My suggestion is why don't you purchase the integrated and try it in your own environment that way you be the judge. If you are not satisfied crutchfied has an excellent return policy. But I strongly think you are going to like the Yamaha. Good luck.

Yes, the 501 has a built-in preamp, but if your TT has it's own preamp just connect through Line 1, 2,or 3. I never tried two preamps, but I'm sure it would cause considerable sound distortion.

jon  May 07, 2016

Edward you don't want to go through two (2) pre-amps. If you cannot by-pass your built-in pre-amp on your turntable, then you want to connect to either the 'Tuner' input or 'Line 1' input on the back of the device. The turntable pre-amp that is included with this Yamaha integrated amp is fine though limited to MM (moving magnet), not MC (moving coil). This is a very good sounding IA but give it some time. I did not like it at first, but after two weeks of running it (burn in) it sounded great! It also has plenty of power! Kevin

I would connect the turntable to one of the line inputs, since it has already been preamplified. I would NOT connect to the phono input, as I would expect real distortion from two gain stages. I come from the OLD NAD 2030 background (absolutely loved it), and am very happy with this Yamaha.

I haven't used it so I don't know, but in the past you need an output, not an input into another device that can "record" the incoming signal. There is no device on or no media to insert the unit. So only if you can use an output digital or analog on the unit will you succeed, in my opinion.

The knobs are plastic. If you use the remote, this may not matter as much.

Plastic. Unfortunately makes a high quality device feel less so. But don't let the cheap knobs overly influence your purchase. It's performance is excellent, so far, with tuner, CD, cassette deck (still holding on to the past), and Bluetooth inputs.
