More details on the McIntosh MB20

Product Research

Features

Bluetooth Transceiver: The MB20 Bluetooth Transceiver has been designed to provide a superior Bluetooth connection to audio equipment that lacks Bluetooth connectivity. The McIntosh MB20 can act as a Bluetooth Receiver and Transmitter (but not at the same time), featuring analog and digital inputs and outputs. The McIntosh MB20 Bluetooth Transceiver has a wireless range of approximately 150 feet.

  • In Receiver mode, you can wirelessly stream audio to the MB20 via Bluetooth from any compatible device with Bluetooth streaming capabilities (including smartphone, tablet, desktop computer, laptop, and more); this audio can then be played through your McIntosh or other brand of system connected to the MB20 via a wired analog or digital connection.
  • When in Transmitter mode, you can wirelessly stream audio that is input into the MB20 via an analog or digital connection to a Bluetooth-enabled speaker, headphone, receiver, or amplifier.

Bluetooth 5.0: The MB20 Transceiver features built-in Bluetooth 5.0 with support for wireless audio streaming (A2DP). It can act as a Bluetooth Receiver or Transmitter, allowing you to wirelessly stream audio to and from the McIntosh MB20 (but not at the same time). In addition to supporting Bluetooth standard SBC audio codec, the MB20 also supports AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) and Qualcomm's aptX HD. Qualcomm aptX HD is an enhanced codec that supports 24-bit/48kHz wireless audio transmission via Bluetooth, so you hear even the smallest details in your music. It also features Qualcomm aptX Low Latency for improved audio transmission speed to deliver sound in sync with applicable visual media.

Note: Make sure the included antenna is installed.

High Performance Audio Converters: When in Receiver mode, the MB20 uses a high-performance 32-bit/192kHz digital-to-analog converter (DAC) for optimum sound quality. When in Transmitter mode, it uses an equally capable high-performance analog-to-digital Converter (ADC) with 110dB Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR).

Balanced and Unbalanced Analog Connectivity: The McIntosh MB20 Bluetooth Transceiver is outfitted with balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA connections for its analog inputs and outputs. Use the balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs to connect a source device (like a SACD player or turntable with built-in phono preamp) and wirelessly transmit the input audio to a Bluetooth-enabled headphone, speaker, receiver or amplifier. Use the balanced XLR or unbalanced RCA outputs to connect the MB20 to your existing home receiver or integrated amplifier, so you wirelessly stream audio from your smartphone, tablet, desktop computer, or laptop to your home audio system.

Note: The MB20 can only wirelessly output audio from one analog or digital input source at a time. All analog and digital audio outputs are active at the same time.

Optical and Coaxial Digital Inputs/Outputs: The McIntosh MB20 Bluetooth Transceiver is outfitted with optical (toslink) and coaxial (RCA) connections for its digital inputs and outputs. Use the optical and coaxial digital inputs to connect a source device (like a CD player) and wirelessly transmit the input audio to a Bluetooth-enabled headphone, speaker, receiver or amplifier. Use the optical or coaxial digital outputs to connect the MB20 to your existing home receiver or integrated, so you wirelessly stream audio from your smartphone, tablet, desktop computer, or laptop to your home audio system.

  • The digital inputs support stereo PCM audio up to 24-bit/192kHz; not compatible with Dolby Digital, DTS, or other multichannel audio formats.
  • When used in combination with a separate outboard DAC, the MB20's digital outputs are fixed at 24-bit/96kHz to be compatible with most third-party DACs in order to maximize performance and maintain audio signal integrity.

Note: The MB20 can only wirelessly output audio from one analog or digital input source at a time. All analog and digital audio outputs are active at the same time.

USB/AC Power Adapter: The McIntosh MB20 comes with a USB/AC power adapter and 41" microUSB-to-USB cable that will plug need to be plugged int the back of the Bluetooth Transceiver and AC wall outlet or surge protector/line conditioner (sold separately).

Q
Can I connect MB20's balanced output directly to my Mcintosh MC352 amplifier? If MB20 and MC352 are connected directly, could there be any compromise to sound quality? Thanks.
tong  Aug 19, 2023
1 answer
A
This Bluetooth transceiver can be connected to a power amp like the McIntosh MC352. You must use the Bluetooth audio source device for all audio controls such as volume and any EQ settings it may offer.

Q
Can I connect the balanced analog output of this unit directly to my Mcintosh MC352 2 channel amplifier? If connecting MB20 directly to MC352, could there be any compromise to the sound quality? Thanks.
tong  Aug 19, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Tong, and thank you for your question. The MC352 is all analog, so the only types of inputs are the XLR balanced, or the RCA unbalanced. The XLR would be the much better input/output to use in this case.

Q
Will I be able to connect SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7 headphones via bluetooth to this transmitter? /
peter  May 24, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Peter, and thank you for your question. Both the headphones and the McIntosh MB20 are using version 5 Bluetooth. I see no reason why these headphones would not work well with the MB20.
hogan  May 24, 2023 (Staff)
Q
When in Transmitter mode, how many headphones can you streamed audio at the same time?
dinh  May 14, 2023
1 answer
A
The Bluetooth transmission can only be connected to one devices at a time. In this case, just one set of Bluetooth headphones.

Q
I have to wear Phonak Naida p90-up left and right hearing aids to hear almost everything. Will this device work in a church atmosphere for my hearing aids?
robert  Mar 05, 2023
1 answer
A
It would be possible to connect this transceiver to an audio mixer's outputs in order to send audio via Bluetooth to a set of Bluetooth capable hearing aids such as the Phonak Naida. We have not tested this device in this particular scenario, but we do offer a 60-day return policy in case it doesn't work out.

Q
How much wireless bandwidth does the MB20 require in order to function fully? I live in an area where robust broadband is a challenge to obtain
seebee  Jan 29, 2023
1 answer
A
The McIntosh MB20 Premium Bluetooth transceiver does not have any wi-fi capability, Will. This means it will require zero network bandwidth as it functions as a standalone unit. If you have limited network connection ability and want premium wireless sound, the MB20 is the clear choice!
bo  Jan 29, 2023 (Staff)
Q
Can McIntosh MB20 be used as a turntable preamp?
george  Jan 04, 2023
1 answer
A
This cannot, George. Line level signals only here, either balanced XLR, RCA, or digital inputs on the fantastic McIntosh MB20 Bluetooth transceiver.

Q
Can this be connected to bang and Olufsen the shape speaker from my cd player?
david  Dec 11, 2022
1 answer
A
This would be able to transmit Bluetooth audio to the Core for the BeoSound Shape speakers. Simply connect the CD player to the MB20.
zachary  Dec 12, 2022 (Staff)
Q
Can this be used as a pass-through device? It has optical in and out, if you connect a CD player to it, and output the signal to a DAC, would that work? Without using Bluetooth. Of course I plan on using this with my phone, and streaming the music, but I don't want to do this every time, since I own 1000+ CDs, thanks.
konrad  Oct 18, 2022
1 answer
A
That's a great question Konrad! The toslink ins/outs will not work as you intend on the CD player sadly. The toslink out is only active when in receiver mode, sending a Bluetooth connected source over the digital output. This is flip flopped for transmitter mode, sending a signal from the input to a Bluetooth device, so no pass through options here. I would recommend using this Toslink splitter in the link below on the output, so you can use your CD player as intended! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_120AS1X3TS/Metra-Ethereal-AS-1X3TSPLIT.html

Q
Can I use it with active speakers only , I Bluetooth stream from my tablet and iPhone ð??±?
marcos585  Jun 17, 2021
2 answers
A
The MB20 can only transmit or receive but not at the same time. So, connecting your tablet or iPhone would eliminate transmitting to the speakers via bluetooth and vice versa. My speakers are hardwired and I use my computer, iPad and/or iPhone to transmit to the MB20.
