About the Kicker 46CXA400.1T

Buck Pomerantz

High-level bass power

Do you like clean bass? Kicker's CXA400.1T mono subwoofer amplifier can put out up to 400 watts RMS, so your bass will both sound loud and full. The quality of the bass tone matters as much as the volume, so a variable low-pass filter helps get maximum performance from your sub/enclosure combination, while a fixed subsonic filter removes the extreme low resonances that cause distortion. A variable bass boost allows you to add some extra low-end punch if you want. An optional wired remote lets you conveniently adjust the bass level from your front seat.

Hooks in almost anywhere in almost any position

This amplifier works with 1-ohm loads, so you won't have to worry too much about matching impedances when you add a second sub to your system. Kicker's Fail-Safe Integration Technology (FIT™) keeps this amp's input free from noise or interference, so you can tap into your vehicle's speaker wiring for an input signal without a worry. A 3-second turn-on/turn-off delay eliminates system pops and other noises. The CXA400.1T comes with hardware that lets you mount it vertically, so you can put it in a location that takes up very little floor space and looks cool too.

Features

CEA-2006 Compliant: CEA-2006 is a system of testing and measurement for mobile audio amplifiers. This voluntary standard advocates a uniform method for measuring an amplifier's RMS power output. The criteria for measuring amplifier power uses a DC input voltage of 14.4 volts and the RMS power output is measured over a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz (for full range amplifiers), with 1% or less Total Harmonic Distortion plus noise (THD+N). Signal-to-Noise ratio is measured in weighted absolute decibels (dBA) at a reference of 1 watt into 4Ω. CEA-2006 standards allow consumers to compare car amplifiers and receivers under the same conditions (apples to apples).

CEA-2006 Specifications:

  • Power Output: 150 watts RMS x 1 into 4Ω
  • Signal to Noise Ratio: 75 dBA (measured at 1 watt into 4Ω)

Other Specifications:

  • Power Output:
    • 2Ω: 300 watts RMS x 1 (14.4 volts, ≤1.0% THD+N)
    • 1Ω: 400 watts RMS x 1 (14.4 volts, ≤1.0% THD+N)
  • Signal to Noise Ratio: 95 dB (at rated power output)

Controls:

  • Input Level: 2-position switch; select high (speaker level) or low (line level)
  • Input Gain Control: rotary input Gain control; continuously variable from 125mV to 5V with the input level switch set to low; 1V to 40V with the input level switch set to high
  • Crossover Frequency: continuously variable rotary dial; set the low pass crossover point between 50Hz and 200Hz; the crossover slope is 12 dB/octave
  • KickEQ Bass Boost: increase the bass level between 0dB and +6dB via the rotary control; centered at 40Hz

Subsonic Filter: The amplifier features a non-defeatable 25Hz Subsonic Filter with a 24dB/octave slope. The Subsonic Filter rolls off extremely low frequencies that can't be cleanly reproduced by the amplifier and subwoofers. This reduces distortion and helps the amp run more efficiently.

Mounting: The efficient Class-D Kicker CX Series amplifiers can be mounted vertically, if desired, with the included mounting brackets.

Auto Turn-on: The amplifier has two methods of turning on: +12V and DC Offset. The preferred method is to run an 18-gauge wire from the remote turn-on lead of the source unit to the Remote (REM) terminal on the amp. When a +12V signal is detected on the wire, the amplifier will turn on. If your source unit lacks a remote turn-on lead (a factory head unit, for example), you can choose to turn on the amplifier via the DC Offset method. When a DC offset is detected (>2.5 volts) on the speaker level inputs, the amplifier automatically turns on.

Vehicle Integration: The CXA400.1 amplifier features Kicker's FIT 2+ (Fail-safe Integration Technology 2 PLUS) technology, providing near-universal compatibility with stock and aftermarket radios. Start/Stop vehicle compatibility and the ability to accept factory input signals as high as 40-volts make the CXA400.1 compatible with almost every vehicle and factory or aftermarket radio.

Wire Connections: The CXA400.1 has screw-down terminals for power, ground, turn-on (REM), and speaker output, which will accommodate bare wire or spade connectors. The power and ground slots are 0.512" wide and the remote and speaker slots are 0.335" wide.

External Fuse: The amplifier does not include a built-in fuse, therefore an external fuse should be placed on the power wire, within 18" of the battery. It is recommended that an 8-gauge amplifier wiring kit and a 40A external fuse be used when installing the amplifier.

Note: Currently (as of 4/11/19) Kicker will extend the standard warranty by an additional year (for a total of three years) when a qualifying Kicker Installation Kit is purchased with the amplifier.

Input Signal: The CXA400.1 accepts either high (speaker-level) or low (line-level) input signals on the RCA inputs, selectable using the input level switch on the end of the amp. When using a speaker-level input signal, add the optional Kicker KiSL speaker level to RCA adapter. The input sensitivity is 125mV-5V (low) or 1V-40V (high).

Preamp Output: Using either a speaker-level or line-level input feeds the stereo RCA output, which passes the audio signal to another amplifier or component. This allows you to daisy-chain another amplifier without having to run RCA cables from the head unit to the second amp.

Optional Wired Remote: The optional CXARC remote bass level control can be added to remotely control the output level of the amplifier. The CXARC's control knob can be mounted near the driver's seat, and the control's cable extended to the amplifier location.

Certified Power: Each amplifier is tested when it comes off of the assembly line. Tests are run for Total Harmonic Distortion, Signal-to-Noise Ratio, Protection Circuit, and Total Power Output. A Certified Power certificate with model and serial number is included with each amp with the measured power output figure, and a pass/fail grade for the other tests.

Q
Will this be enough for a 48trtp122 sub?
vinicio  Jun 14, 2023
1 answer
A
Although this amplifier could be used to power 48TRTP122, it would be ideal to use an amplifier that can provide around 500 watts RMS. Our advisors are happy to help with selecting the best amplifier for the job. You may reach us via online chat or phone at 1-800-324-9695.
zachary  Jun 14, 2023 (Staff)
Q
Can I or should I bridge this amp with a Kicker 48CDF104?
jeremy  Jun 06, 2023
1 answer
A
This amp is not bridgeable as it is a mono amp with only one channel, Jeremy. You can breathe easy here with simple 2-wire (positive and negative) speaker connections to the Kicker 48CDF104 subwoofer. This configuration would deliver 150-watts RMS to the 4-ohm sub in the link below for reference, a perfect match! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_20648CF104/Kicker-48CDF104.html

Q
Can I install this amp using only one RCA input (right rear speaker channel)?
jessee  Dec 16, 2022
1 answer
A
It would be advisable to use both inputs on this amplifier, even if that requires an RCA splitter. In terms of outputs used from an aftermarket radio, I wouldn't advise using only a right rear channel output as that would mean missing any bass frequencies that exist on the left channel. Although this won't matter for some music where the same bass is present in both left and right channels, a good deal of music has bass on one channel or another. This is especially true of music from the early days of stereo recording in the 1960s.
zachary  Dec 16, 2022 (Staff)
Q
bridgeable?
christopher  Nov 14, 2022
1 answer
A
Greetings Christopher, and than you for your question. The Kicker 46CXA400.1T is already a single channel (mono) amplifier. You cannot bridge a mono amp. This amp like many mono amps today have two plus, and two minus speaker terminal outputs. But its still a single channel amplifier.

Q
If I have one KICKER 48CWRT672 TWO OHM DVC sub (6.75"),and want to hook it up to the KICKER 46CXA400.1T monoblock amp, how do I wire it for optimum sound?
mike  Nov 03, 2021
1 answer
A
Looks like that subs power rating is 75-150 watts rms, and 300 watt peak. The amp is rated at 150 watt rms at a 4ohm load. Wire the speaker terminals in series to make a 4ohm load, for the amp output at 150 watts. If you wire in parallel, it drops to a 1ohm load, and the amp output will be 400 watts, too much for the speaker. Here is a YouTube video explaining it. https://youtu.be/-cNwXfacxvs Hope this helps. I have two of these amps. One is driving 2 12" Kicker subs in my truck. I have to dial the volume on the subs back so they are not overpowering the rest of the trucks speakers. I also have one driving 2 JL Audio 10" subs and the same condition exists - I have to adjust the sub's volume to less than half way up on the volume knob. I believe this amp will adequately drive almost any sub you hook up to it. I hope this helps!

Q
Would this amp have enough power to push the JL Audio HO110RG-W3v3 to it's full capacity? And can it be wired to this sub @ 1ohm?
jonathan  Aug 22, 2021
1 answer
A
That loaded subwoofer box cannot be rewired to 1 ohm. It can handle 500 watts RMS and this amp will not be able to give that power to it. I recommend contacting an advisor by calling 1-800-324-9695 to get a personal recommendation on an amp to power it

Q
How do you wire a dvc 2 ohm sub to 1 ohm with this amp?
matthew  Jul 22, 2021
2 answers
A
Wire in parallel. Positive from amp to one positive terminal of the sub and a wire from that terminal to the next positive terminal. Same for negative. There are many diagrams on the internet, including Crutchfield.
s michelle  Jul 26, 2021
A
Connect positive to positive and negative to negative from both coils (Parallel connection). Should give 1 ohm load. Wiring positive to negative from each coil (series connection) would measure 4 ohms.

My Toyota Corolla hybrid is suggested that I donâ??t install anything over 30 amp, my kicker amp uses 40. Would this cause my amp to shut itself down, or do I have a short as it happens at high volume?

Not wanting to give my first sarcastic answer to the question. IMO you need to run a 40 amp. fused power wire rated to handle 40 amps. directly to a 12 volt battery in your vehicle.

Q
Would this amp pair good with 2 shallow mount 8" dual 2" 4 ohm voice coil 400 watt subs?
jami  Jun 11, 2021
1 answer
A
While I'm not familiar with those speakers, I can say that this amp drives a pair of Kicker 12" subs in my truck quite well. Rarely can I adjust the optional sub volume control above halfway. I also have this amp in my fifth wheel driving a pair of JL Audio 10" subs. I had originally installed a pair of 10" Bazooka sub tubes, but they shook the trailer and somewhat overpowered the music so I went with the JLs instead. Personally, I don't think you could go wrong with this amp.

Is it ideal to run 2 8" Pioneer TS-A2000LB 2 ohm (a piece) subwoofers on a Kicker 46CXA400.1T amp?
jacob  May 26, 2021
1 answer
A
If you wire them in parallel so the amp recieves a 1 ohm load, you will get probably get around 420 watts RMS if you dont have any voltage issues, and each of those speakers is rated at 250 watts RMS, so this amp would work quite well for those speakers. I have no issues running this amp at 1 ohm, it stays cool and works very well.

Technically yes. But it is designed to power a single subwoofer. It would work great for a single 10" Kicker. I'd recommend a 2 Channel, 600+ Watt Amp for your setup
jason  Feb 23, 2021
A
It will work but will be powering the subs on the lower end of their capability. The 800.1 would be best but either way just make sure you wire the subs for a 1 ohm load to get the most out of the amp.
roger kyle  Feb 23, 2021

I have a Pioneer TS-A2000LD2 that i want to wore to this. It is 250 rms and can be wired at either 1 or 4 ohms. Is it better to go under or over power to the sub?
patrick  Jan 16, 2021

A
With that amp and a load of 1 ohm it is rated for 400w rms. That would be too much for the pioneer subwoofer.
roger kyle  Feb 23, 2021
Q
would this work for two 12s? 4 ohm each. 300 Watt rms pair. 600 Watt pair max. i know nothing about subs just wanna know the best amp to get with these subs
kaleb wyatt  Jan 11, 2021
5 answers
A
This amp would pair perfect for your setup. With 2-12" subs at 4 ohm each, you will be running a 2 ohm load. This amp will match perfectly to the RMS of the 2 subs, powering 300 watts total at 2 ohms.
scott  Jan 12, 2021
A
Yes it'll work fantastic I have that same setup works fine sounds great you'll love it
douglas  Jan 11, 2021
A
I think this amp might be a bit underpowered for that setup.
brett  Jan 11, 2021
A
At 4omh this amp will only output 150w per channel so it would be underpowered. Will it work? Yes, but you will not be getting everything out of your 12s. For reference i use 2 kicker 10s at 2ohms to get 300w per channel.
philip  Jan 11, 2021
A
Depends on how much bass you want. I have 112 with 300 W in a hummer H3 sounds great. I had to tens With 600 W was to much.

Does this come with a bass controller? Also how will it work on a Kicker CompVT 43CVT122 12" 2-ohm component subwoofer?
dillon  Dec 09, 2020

A
The bass controller is optional-not included with the amp. I have 2 of this amp-one in truck driving 2-12" Kicker subs and the other in my fifth wheel driving 2- 10" JL Audio subs. I have bass controllers on both and they're set below half volume. At that setting, there is more than enough booming bass! I am very pleased with this sub amp!

Is this amp too much for just one 12" B-17 sound ordnance sub?
kronk  Nov 24, 2020

This amp should work really well with that sub. This amp put out 150-200 watts at 4ohm, 300-350 at 2ohm and 400-450 at 1ohm. I have installed 4 of these amps this year. All of their birthsheet said about 500 watts of total power. Great solid versatile amp. And you could always add another sub to this amp down the road.
kane  Dec 17, 2020
A
If the sub is 4 ohm you will get 150 watts RMS (probably a bit more) and that would be fine as that sub is 250 watt RMS max.

Q
Why don't the Crutchfield wiring kits come with rcas to connect a Sub to the amp?
garrett  Nov 05, 2020
1 answer
A
Probably because you can wire this amp to your stereo's speaker leads. You don't have to use RCA cables to connect your sub amp. I found it to be easier to connect using the speaker leads because using this method eliminates the need for a separate wire to signal the amp to power up. I've used this method on two sub amps, one in my truck and one in my fifth wheel camper.

Absolutely! I'm driving 2 Kicker 12" subs in my truck and in my fifth wheel toy hauler I'm driving 2 10"JL Audio subs. Lots of bass! Have to dial it back with sub volume control.

You will need an 8 gauge amplifier wiring kit for the installation of the Kicker 46CXA400.1T amp.

I'm pretty sure 8 Guage is recommended. It's what I used for mine.

I originally purchased an infinity amplifier that I would have assumed would run their REF flex8D subwoofer. With nothing but problems using that amplifier I was able to return it and switched to the Kicker amp to power it. I have been pleased with the results ever since.

I think it would be gust fine I always try to over power a bit than I tune it way like it

I don't think so but the Crutchfield Advisor can match everything for you. For a compact and shallow setup in my 06 Wrangler I connected that Kicker 46CXA4001T Amp with a Kicker CompRT 43CWRT81 8" with Dual 1-ohm coils SW that I wired in series and placed in a poly fiber stuffed Pioneer UD-SW200D 8" Enclosure. I did use the EFX Amp 8 gauge wiring kit too. It sounds fantastic. Good luck!

I don't believe it would. My set-up is a Kicker 8" sub, 2-Ohm, with an in-line control knob. Sounds great

Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the best amp for your subs I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system.

It would be a good matching combination. The amp is stable to 1 ohm, so If you wire the speakers in parallel to achieve a combined 1ohm resistance the amp rms and the speakers rms are equal. Should work great.

Its should push good if you get 2 4ohm subs. You can expect a total output of 300w (150 each) and Kicker usually exceeds the rated power output.

It would be more than enough. Mine is pushing (2) 12" and sounds awesome. Small but mighty this one is..

I have mine hooked to two 12 " kickers in the cab of a 3/4 ton full size extra cab truck and the are amazing. I have the adjustable dial sold by cruthfield well worth the money.
