KEF Q150 bookshelf speakers

An expanded view of the Uni-Q driver assembly shows the detailed design and build quality that goes into making each Q150.

A room-filling "sweet spot," thanks to Uni-Q® technology

KEF's patented Uni-Q technology places each speaker's 1" tweeter in the acoustic center of the 5-1/4" woofer. This concentric design allows sounds to originate from a single point source, making the "sweet spot" (the ideal listening position) much larger.

Here at Crutchfield, we've had the pleasure of hearing Uni-Q technology in person many times. Sit wherever you like — you'll enjoy detailed, accurate three-dimensional sound throughout your room.

Get the most out of your stand-mount speakers

I'm a proponent of using high-quality speaker stands with "bookshelf" speakers. They help improve the sound by giving your speakers a stable, vibration-free platform. When shopping for stands, remember that the ideal height will place the tweeters roughly level with your ears, for maximum clarity.

Speaker stands also give you more placement flexibility, since you won't be limited to a space on your shelf or table. The Sanus SF26 steel stands are an excellent choice to use with these speakers, but feel free to contact one of our Advisors for a specific recommendation for your setup.

Optional magnetic grille available separately.

Features

Uni-Q Driver Array: At the heart of the Q Series loudspeaker is the Uni-Q driver array. This signature innovation by KEF places the tweeter in the acoustic center of the mid-bass cone, with both drivers acting as a single point source. The result is a more detailed, accurate three-dimensional sound image, which is dispersed more evenly throughout the room than is possible with any conventional speaker. The Uni-Q driver array is made up of a 1" aluminum dome tweeter and a 5.25" aluminum mid-bass woofer.

  • 1" Aluminum Dome Tweeter: At the center of the Uni-Q driver array is a 1" aluminum dome tweeter that utilizes KEF's "tangerine" waveguide over the tweeter dome for ultra-wide dispersion. Further enhancements to the 1" aluminum dome tweeter is a damped loading tube and a cone-neck de-coupler. The damped tweeter loading tube reduces any harshness in the lower treble frequencies by gently terminating the sound produced from the rear. The cone-neck de-coupler reduces output in the cone breakup region to improve high frequency performance.
  • 5.25" Aluminum Mid-Bass Woofer: The 5.25" mid-bass woofer features an aluminum cone structure that has been engineered to reduce cone breakup and improve midrange performance. The woofer's optimized suspension allows more movement, better controlled excursion, and lower distortion for accurate bass performance. As well as allowing the woofer's cone its full extension, KEF's ingenious Z-flex surround guides the sound from the tweeter across the surround without any disturbance or secondary radiation.

Centered Drivers: To optimize the high resolution purity of the Q Series bookshelf speaker, the Uni-Q driver array is positioned to the center of the cabinet to reduce unwanted internal resonance and adding refinement to sonic clarity and detail. Expect to hear clear highs, smooth midrange and clean bass with minimum distortion at any volume level.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Port Design: Featuring a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) port design with the port positioned to the rear of the speaker, clarity is improved by reducing the audibility of the midrange leakage through the port. The port is also flared to minimize turbulence at high levels and reduce port noise with less low frequency compression.

Note: Foam port plugs are included to insert into the rear-firing ports, if the bass is to "boomy" due to room placement.

Sleek Cabinet Design: The sculpted Q Series finish epitomizes KEF's approach with seamless, sleek cabinets unblemished by visible fittings and joints. Q Series speakers are coated with a fine satin finish with matching driver colors. If you wish to conceal the drivers, optional magnetically attached speaker grilles (see Accessories Tab) are available and sold separately.

Gold-Plated Binding Post Terminals: On the rear of the speaker cabinet is a pair of heavy-duty, gold-plated binding post terminals that will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin-connectors, spade-lugs, and banana plugs (single only). Plastic inserts must be removed from the binding posts to use banana plugs.

Mounting & Placement Options: The bookshelf speaker can simply be placed on a stand, table-top, shelf, or other flat-surface. The included self-adhesive rubber feet protect your furniture and add approximately 0.1875" to the overall height of the speaker. A pair of speakers should be positioned 6' to 10' apart and placed between 18" to 24" off the floor. They should be positioned at least 9" from the back wall due to their rear-firing port and 39" from side walls. The speakers can be "toed-in" or angled inward toward the main listening area to improve stereo imaging and soundstage.

Note: Crutchfield does not offer a wall-mount bracket for the Q Series bookshelf speaker. However, a wall-mount bracket is available directly from the manufacturer.

Q Series: Q Series speakers by KEF deliver natural, accurate, high-resolution sound. First introduced in 1991, the multiple award-winning Q Series has long delighted music lovers and audiophiles with outstanding sound quality and innovative design. The Q Series, now in its 8th iteration, brings high resolution sound with more depth and more clarity. The Q Series consists of three floorstanding speakers (Q550/Q750/Q950), two bookshelf speakers (Q150/Q350), two center channel speakers (Q650C/Q250C), and Dolby Atmos speaker (Q50A) - all sold separately.

Optional Powered Subwoofer: A KEF Kube series powered subwoofer (sold separately) is the perfect addition to the Q Series loudspeakers.

Q
Good for surround big room?
jerryg69  Dec 29, 2023
1 answer
A
The KEF Q150's are a great choice for surround speaker channels, Edward. With a large room, make sure to use a powerful home theater receiver or amplifier for best results. The KEF Q150's can handle a maximum RMS of 100-watts.

Q
What is the function of the foam port plugs? When should they be used?
alejandro leiva  Nov 29, 2022
1 answer
A
You can use the foam plugs if you find the bass response is too 'boomy', depending on the placement in your room. They will help tighten the lower end and make it less overwhelming to match the rest of your system.

have not used the speakers in that application. I use my speakers on a desk top near field application. Enjoy them very much. I can tell you these speakers are surprisingly capable of producing ver good sound. I would imagine that they would do a very good job in your application.

Hi - I use my Q150s as small mains in my office / music space. Although I don't have experience with them in a surround setup, their accuracy and musicality would allow them to adapt to surround use. My question to you: Do you need a speaker of this size and reproduction range for the limited needs of rear surrounds? Unless you are doing a more extensive immersive playback system, like Atmos, these may be a bit of overkill. But, they do sound very nice!

I'm looking to pair these with the Denon PMA 600ne and wonder if these speakers are efficient enough foe the the modest power of the amp?

I think it will power them just right if you are looking to power a small room for personal use they would be great and they were just on sale.

I ran these with my 42 watt per channel Onkyo before upgrading to a 100 watt amp. The speakers sounded clear and crisp, and out performed my older B&W 6 series. You won't be disappointed with the KEF speakers.

I'm using the Marantz NR1608 to drive the KEF Q150, have no issues. Hope that helps.
john  Jul 15, 2021
A
In my opinion, yes they are. They are a ported enclosure, and although I didn't review sensitivity specs before answering this, they appear to be quite efficient. I have used mine with both a vintage Sherwood 50 WPC receiver, and with a more modern Harman/Kardon amp with 100 WPC. Both amplifiers make the KEF's sing. I hope this helps.

Q
Can these speakers be put on their side? What is the dispersion angle of the horn or high frequency driver?
andrew  Jan 11, 2021
2 answers
A
We typically recommend standing them upright for better coverage of the treble in the room. We do not have the dispersion angle information on them and recommend contacting KEF customer service by calling 732-683-2356 to see if they can provide that information.
jason  Jan 30, 2021 (Staff)
A
Unfortunately I have never used the KEF speakers on their side. As far as dispersion they are some of the best speakers that I have heard. I would not be reluctant to put them on their side if there was a need for the application. The KEF 150's are the best sounding speakers for the price.

They have banana plugs. I use Morrow and Grover Huffman cables. My speaker wires are lower end Grover Huffman. They are very dynamic and musical. They will sound great when you upgrade your speakers.

Q
I am looking at these or the Klipsch rp400m for my desktop workstation. I will power them with an older Yamaha 2channel amp in combination with a Schiit dac. Which one is best suited for near field listening?
maestro  Apr 19, 2020
3 answers
A
If your desk is up against a wall and I had to choose between these two I'd go with the KEFs as they come with port plugs to reduce muddied bass. It'd probably be better to pick a speaker that's ported in front or on bottom. If your desk is not against a wall this wouldn't matter and I'm not familiar with the Klipsch speakers so I don't have a recommendation either way. Also, I hope the desk to be used is fairly big these speakers aren't all that small definitely much larger than desktop computer speakers.

I use the KEF model in a home office but they are positioned 8-10 feet in front of me and 12 feet apart (on the walls). They sound great like this. I don't expect that using them close to you would be very pleasant.

Q
How would I pair these with my project carbon debut evo turntable?
silky  Oct 25, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Ryan. Thank you for your question. First you will be needing an amplifier of some sort. Stereo receiver, or Integrated amplifier etc. These speakers are not powered, so between the Turntable and the speakers you would need amp. If you need assistance choosing one, please contact one of our advisors at 800-324-9695.

I want to match my existing receiver to some wireless speakers. Would someone there be able to give an old geezer who has a bunch of CD's some advice?
steve  Apr 09, 2022

Hi Steve, The KEF Q150s are not wireless. If you have a receiver, you shouldn't need wireless speakers, but I understand wanting them for aesthetic reasons. Hope that helps, Jack

Q
Would these be ideal for a left/right in a 5.1 system? Room is 12'x19'.
tyrone  Oct 18, 2020
2 answers
A
The Q150 would be adequate in a room that size with an appropriate subwoofer (better yet a pair for balance). Likely use the matching center and finish with Q150 rears. Particularly would work if don't listen at higher volumes. Many experts would argue that the 5" driver just isn't enough for the front channels. I think in that room it would work. Good luck
andrew  Oct 19, 2020
A
Yes sir but I would highly recommend the RSL CG5 speakers instead. Much better soundstage, bass, and imaging. I only kept the Q150's for a day or so because they didn't at all lie up to the hype. Good luck to you sir. If you live near Atlanta your welcome to come over and hear for yourself
