Dave Delamere

The wireless option for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto

If you've got a factory or aftermarket car stereo that includes wired Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, CRUX's ACP-WLX interface lets you convert it to wireless CarPlay or Android Auto. Just set and forget — simply plug the interface into the stereo's CarPlay/Android Auto-compatible USB port, follow the simple onscreen instructions, and bingo, you're good to go wirelessly. The ACP-WLX will remember your settings when you hop back in your vehicle. The ACP-WLX interface works with any factory radio with wired Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and with select aftermarket stereos with wired Apple CarPlay/Android Auto made by Alpine, Kenwood, JVC, Pioneer, Jensen, Boss, Dual, Axxera, and Stinger.

Wired or wireless

This CRUX solution includes the compact interface and cables you need to connect to your stereo's USB input. The ACP-WLX includes a pass-through USB port, so you can switch back to wired operation if you need to charge up your phone's battery. If you want to stay wireless, you may want to consider a wireless Qi charger to help keep your iPhone's battery replenished.

Compatibility notes: This interface only works with radios that offer wired Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. It is not compatible with factory radios that require the Apple CarPlay or Android Auto app to be downloaded. This interface is compatible with Sony aftermarket car stereos with a firmware update.

Features

Wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto Dongle: The CRUX ACP-WLX Wireless Dongle converts wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in select aftermarket car stereos to wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Compatible aftermarket radios include Kenwood, Pioneer, JVC, Alpine, Jensen, Boss, Dual/Axxera, and Stinger. It also works with factory radios that have built-in CarPlay and Android Auto (not compatible with factory radios that require the Apple CarPlay or Android Auto app to be downloaded).

  • Now compatible with Sony aftermarket head units via firmware update.
  • CRUX does not guarantee compatibility with all Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible aftermarket and factory radio models from the brands listed above.
  • The ACP-WLX Wireless Dongle cannot be used in conjunction with CRUX's Smart-Play Integration Systems for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

USB & Bluetooth Connectivity: The CRUX ACP-WLX features a USB-C port and comes with a 12" USB cable that plugs into your compatible factory or aftermarket radio's USB port that is used for CarPlay or Android Auto. You'll then need to connect your Apple iPhone (5S or newer) or Android smartphone (OS Lollipop 5.0 or newer) to the ACP-WLX via Bluetooth to gain wireless connectivity. Select your compatible radio's USB-enabled CarPlay or Android Auto source input for setup and playback.

  • Compatible Wireless Apple CarPlay Devices: An Apple iPhone with iOS 9.0+ and 5GHZ WiFi can utilize Wireless Apple CarPlay with the CRUX ACP-WLX.
  • Compatible Android Auto Wireless Devices: A Google or Samsung smartphone with Android OS 10.0+ or any smartphone with Android OS 11.0+ and 5GHz WiFi can utilize Android Auto Wireless with the CRUX ACP-WLX.

Note: The ACP-WLX comes with a 12" USB-C to USB-A cable and a 12" USB-C to USB cable. Only one cable will be used based on the type of USB connection on the back of your compatible aftermarket head unit or OEM radio.

Pass-Through USB Port: There is also a pass-through USB-A port on the CRUX ACP-WL that allows you to connect your Apple iPhone's Lighting-to-USB cable or Android smartphone's USB cable, so you can continue to charge the phone's battery while enjoying wireless CarPlay or Android Auto.

Q
I'm looking to swap out my current boss head unit for a touchscreen model with android auto. How would this affect the bt features of the radio itself? (Wired android auto only, bt calls and media stream on the one I'm looking at.)
william  Feb 18, 2024
1 answer
A
Greetings William. Thank you for your question. This interface is to add wireless Android Auto to an existing stereo that has wired only Android Auto. Android Auto stereos also have Bluetooth, Android Auto wireless would not use Bluetooth, but wifi. So your hands free calls work as normal, even when you have your phone wired in. Media streaming apps are supported by Android Auto, and a wired connection for wired Android Auto. Non supported streaming apps can be sent via Bluetooth.

Q
How do I get the apple music app to work?
julie  Feb 12, 2024
1 answer
A
The CRUX ACP-WLX wireless Carplay adapter is used to make select existing aftermarket or factory radios with wired Carplay features wireless, Julie. After you set up CarPlay, you can play content from the Music app while driving. If you have any issues with your Crutchfield purchased products, please call our Technical Support hotline with your order number handy and we are happy to assist, 7-days a week.

Q
Does this work with the Infiniti G25x 2012 no bose / no navigation?
noah  Nov 27, 2023
1 answer
A
The CRUX ACP-WLX Wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto interface turns an already existing Carplay/Android Auto wired feature wireless, Noah. The CRUX can work with factory and aftermarket radios. If your vehicle did not come with Carplay/Android Auto originally as a wired USB feature, this will not add it to your factory radio.

Q
Looking for Apple CarPlay for Lexus 2013 ES300H, will this work?
aijaz  Nov 05, 2023
1 answer
A
The CRUX ACP-WLX is not designed to provide CarPlay for your vehicle. It is designed to make pre-existing CarPlay wireless.
zachary  Nov 05, 2023 (Staff)
Q
Do you know if this is compatible with an 2012 Mercedes SLK 250? Thanks!
sara  Jul 11, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Sara, and thank you for your question. If your existing radio has Apple Carplay/Android Auto but the phone needs to be wired, this Crux interface will make it so your phone would not have to plug in. In a nutshell, your radio must already have wired Carplay/Android Auto.

Does this work with the Galaxy A54 phone? It does not appear to be listed in the instructions.

Q
Does this work with pioneer avh 5800?
jjb75  May 11, 2023
1 answer
A
The CRUX ACP-WLX will not work with the Pioneer AVH 5800, John. This adapter is used to convert radios that have Carplay with a wired USB to Carplay wireless. Since the Pioneer AVH-5800 does not have Carplay as a feature this CRUX will not work, sadly.

Q
Is it compatible with an aftermarket built in wireless carplay head unit?
steve  Mar 28, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Steve, and thank you for your question. Technically if your aftermarket stereo already has wireless Carplay, you would not need this device. If your stereo only has wired Carplay, then this will make it wireless.

Q
Will this unit work with the. Factory radio in a 2009 lexus is 250?
victor  Feb 10, 2023
1 answer
A
This Crux adapter will only work in the factory radio if it already has stock wired Carplay and/or Android Auto. If it doesn't then it will not be compatible with your Lexus.

Q
steering wheel control features still work with dongle??
kenneth  Jan 17, 2023
1 answer
A
That's correct, Kenneth. Since this CRUX ACP-WLX Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto interface connects directly to a factory installed or aftermarket radio that supports wired CarPlay (not all aftermarket radios are compatible) this will not affect steering wheel control features. If they are working now, you are good to go!

Q
Does this work for a 2015 Chevy Tahoe (first year model)?
anthony  Dec 18, 2022
1 answer
A
This CRUX ACP-WLX Wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto interface only works with radios that support Carplay or Android Auto via a wired USB, Anthony. This does work for OEM radios as well as aftermarket. It will not add the Carplay or Android Auto capability if your radio does not already support it. I hope this helps!

Q
Is this compatible with BOSS BE7ACP?
alejandro  Nov 20, 2022
1 answer
A
Greetings Alejandro, and thank you for your question. It is compatible with most stereos including factory radios with wired Apple Carplay/Android Auto. Boss stereos with Carplay/Android Auto are compatible.

Q
Does it works on 2019 Toyota Highlander?
ben1988  Nov 19, 2022
1 answer
A
If you have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto as an included feature on your 2019 Toyota Highlander already with wired USB Ben, then this CRUX ACP-WLX Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto interface could make that wired CarPlay or Android Auto totally wireless! This will not add CarPlay or Android Auto to a vehicle that does not already have it supported with USB, that is very important to keep in mind. If you need to add the CarPlay or Android Auto feature totally you will have to upgrade your radio to something like this Sony XAV-AX4000 in the link below. This radio has the screen mirroring wirelessly, and also fits in your dash. You can even keep almost all of your original features with the right install kit. You have options, and you can give us a call at 1.800.324.9695 anytime you need a live Advisor to help! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_158XAV4000/Sony-XAV-AX4000.html

Q
Will this be compatible with 2019 Macan?
todd  Nov 17, 2022
1 answer
A
Greetings Todd, and thank you for your question. The vehicle really does not matter. If your vehicle has wired Apple Carplay, this will convert it to wireless.
hogan  Nov 17, 2022 (Staff)
Q
I'm reading "select AFTERMARKET car stereos..." so I'm guessing this will not work with factory 8" screen stereos??
dj  Nov 03, 2022

A
It will also work with most factory car stereos with CarPlay/Android Auto.

Q
Will this work with a 2016 Nissan Versa note and does it do away with back up camera?
samuel  Oct 22, 2022
1 answer
A
This can covert a stock radio with wired Apple CarPlay to wireless Apple CarPlay and will not interfere with the functioning of a backup camera. The only issue is that the 2016 Nissan Versa Note brochure does not mention Apple CarPlay as an ability of the stock radio. We do not expect it will work with the stock radio in your 2016 Nissan Versa Note. It is possible to replace the stock radio with an Apple CarPlay compatible receiver and retain the use of the stock back up camera. I recommend contacting an advisor by calling 1-800-324-9695 to get a personal recommendation on a new receiver

Q
will this add carplay to a car that doesnt have it?
ryan  Oct 07, 2022

A
No. This will allow specific radios that have wired CarPlay to operate wirelessly.
zachary  Oct 07, 2022 (Staff)
Q
Will this work with a Acura TSX 2009 w/ Nav ?
willllll  Oct 07, 2022
1 answer
A
This would not be compatible with the factory radio in the 2009 Acura TSX. This device is not intended to give CarPlay or Android Auto functionality to a radio that does not have it. It is designed to allow for wireless CarPlay/Android Auto with radios that already have those features but lack wireless capability.
zachary  Oct 07, 2022 (Staff)
Q
Is this compatible with the Sony XAV-AX7000?
ryan  Sep 27, 2022

A
Yes that Crux adapter is compatible with the Sony AX7000.

Q
Will this work on a 2018 BMW X2?
jill  Sep 19, 2022
1 answer
A
If you have wired Carplay in your 2018 BMW X2, then this should Jill! CRUX does not guarantee compatibility with all Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible aftermarket and factory radio models from the brands listed above, and they sadly do not provide any list to check sadly. If you try it and it does not work you have a full 60 days to send it back for a full refund. Just keep all the packaging and original box, and we take care of the rest if need be!

Q
Will this work on a 2019 Nissan Pathfinder sl?
alfredo  Jul 19, 2022
1 answer
A
Based on our research, the 2019 Nissan Pathfinder did not include CarPlay or Android Auto as features on the factory radio. This product is not designed to add these features. Instead it simply allows those features to become wireless is they are already present on a given car radio.

Q
Does this device (once initially paired to my iPhone via Bluetooth) thereafter utilize WiFi to connect to my iPhone during normal CarPlay operation? Or does it utilize Bluetooth as the connection to my iPhone during normal CarPlay operation?
john  Jun 24, 2022
1 answer
A
Bluetooth is only used for initial pairing. During normal CarPlay operation, the connection takes place via Wi-Fi. Bluetooth does not offer enough bandwidth to transfer the level on information required for CarPlay.

Q
Is this compatible with Boss BE7ACP-CFT Package? And where does this adapter stay- is it hidden?
becca  Jun 15, 2022
1 answer
A
Great question Becca! This CRUX ACP-WLX is a really great unit, this can connect to the Boss BE&ACP-CFT or any other wired Carplay or Android auto radio! You can hide this completely out of sight, or you can put it somewhere like the glovebox in case you do need to plug in to the USB to charge. This is a super flexible unit and makes your Carplay/Android auto totally wireless!

Hello, can I put it into Mitsubishi Outlander 2021?
honza  Jun 01, 2022

While we have not tested it in a 2021 Outlander, we do know that it is rated to work with factory radios that have built-in CarPlay and Android Auto (the ones that do not require the Apple CarPlay or Android Auto app to be downloaded).
